Kelagur Tea Estate Overview
It is a hidden gem in the Western Ghats of Karnataka. It is situated in Mudigere taluk of Chikmagalur, 63 km from Chikmagalur and 34 km from Mudigere.
Spread over 1,200 acres, this estate is known for its beautiful views and quality of tea production. It is a historic tea plantation established in the British era in 1927 by Alan Parnwell.
Exploring this is a unique experience. You can see the rolling hills filled with tea plantations, the peaceful weather, and the process of quality tea production at the Kelagur tea factory. Apart from this, you will also get to see a coffee plantation in Kelagur. The weather around here is ideal for both.

Best time to visit Tea Estate
Here can be visited at any time during the year. You will always get good views and can experience the tea production process in the factory.
The best time to visit the Kelgur Tea Estate is from October to March. During this time, you will see the rolling hills will look lush green with tea plantations. There are some small waterfalls in the estate in which you will get good water flow, a misty atmosphere, and pleasant weather.
If you are an adventure seeker, then you can also visit during monsoon; exploring during this time will be fun and challenging too.
Kelagur Tea Estate Timings and Entry Fee
You can explore this estate between 8 am and 5 pm. If you want to visit the Kelagur tea factory and see the production process, you must go before 12 pm. After that, you can only take a factory tour, you will not be able to see the production process.
There will be an entry fee of Rs 10 to explore.
How to reach the Kelagur tea estate
Kottigehara is the nearest small town to this tea estate, which is 17 km away. It is situated on the way to Charmadi Ghat from Kalasa.
If you are coming from Bangalore, drive towards Chikmagalur via NH75 and then take the route to Kalasa via Mudigere and Kottigehara. This tea estate will be around 289 km from Bangalore and 63 km from Chikmagalur.
From Mangalore, drive towards Kalasa via Charmadi Ghat and Kottigehara, Which is 121 km from Mangalore.
From both places, wherever you are coming, you don’t need to go to Kalasa, Instead, you will find this Tea Estate 24 km before Kalasa.
Tea Estate will be visible on the roadside 4 km before Kelagur Tea Estate and Factory, but this is not the place where you have to go, but a small part of it which is explorable on the way. Now, from here, you have to take a ticket for the Estate and Tea Factory visit, which you will get at the Tea stalls in front of the estate. Then, drive towards the estate and factory.
Tips for travellers
- It is an off-beat place, and a bit tricky to reach here, so it is better to reach Kelagur village and ask a local or hire a guide. Do not rely only on Google Maps.
- The route to the estate is a single road, so do not go by car or a big vehicle because if a vehicle comes from the front, you will not be able to go ahead. It is better to explore by bike. Or rent an auto from Kelgur village.
- If you want to see the tea production process, then visit till 12 Pm.

This Fort and Falls are an adventurous place that can only be reached by trekking. The trek starts near Rani Jhari, which is 6.4 km away from Kelgur Estate. The distance of the trek is 8 km for Bandaje Falls and 3 to 4 km for the Fort. Both routes are the same. First, you will reach the Fort and then the waterfalls.
