About me

Hello, I’m Ahetesham Sait, a passionate traveller. I like nature, waterfalls, and offbeat places, and Kodige Falls is one of those places. In this post, I share the details I collected about the entry fee, timings, route, and nearby places. I hope this helps you plan your Kodige Falls in Chikmagalur trip without confusion.

I have visited Kodige Falls two times with my friends, once on a weekday and once on a weekend, after the monsoon. The water was calm both times, and it was safe to swim, so I enjoyed a good swim. The walk to the falls is easy, and the view from the top is my favourite part, because the falls look amazing from above.

There are washrooms near the falls, and on weekends one shop sells snacks. The only thing I did not like is that Kodige Falls is small, so it can get overcrowded on weekends. The place felt moderately crowded when I visited. If I go again, I will choose a weekday and carry my own food and water.

Kodige Falls in Chikmagalur: In Short

Kodige Falls in Chikmagalur is a peaceful waterfall near Durgadahalli village. It is surrounded by thick forest and coffee estates. The water comes from the Netravati River and falls from about 30 feet. It forms a pool at the bottom. The place is on private land, so visitors pay a small entry fee. The walk from the parking area is about 1 km.

Best Time to Visit Kodige Falls

The best time is after the monsoon, when the forest is green, and the water flow is good.

  • Post-monsoon (around October to February): Good water, green views, and safer conditions. Swim only when local conditions allow.
  • Monsoon (around June to September): The water can be very strong. It can be dangerous to enter the water. The waterfall may close to visitors during peak monsoon.
  • Summer (around March to May): Water flow can be low. Check local conditions first.

The month ranges are a general guide, not my personal experience. Weather changes every year.

How to Reach Kodige Falls

Drive to Durgadahalli village, park there, and walk about 1 km to the falls.

The nearest towns are Kottigehara (about 22 km) and Kalasa (about 27 km). Use Google Maps and search “Kodige Falls” or “Durgadahalli.” Parking is in Durgadahalli village, about 1 km from the waterfall.

From the parking area, you have three options.

By Walking

The waterfall is about 1 km from the parking area.

  • First 500 metres: cement road
  • Last 500 metres: mud road

In the monsoon, the route can be muddy and slippery. Wear shoes with good grip.

By Off-Road Vehicle

If you do not want to walk, you can ask about a pickup truck or 4×4 jeep. These may not always be available. Ask locally and confirm the fare before you start.

By Bike

The road is rough. If your bike is not made for off-road riding, park about 200 metres before and walk the rest.

At the Waterfall

Near the falls, there is a house where you buy the ticket. After buying it, walk about 100 metres to see the waterfall.

How to Reach from Bangalore

The distance is about 294 km. Most people go by car or bike. You can also take a bus to Chikmagalur, Kalasa, or Mudigere, and then hire a local vehicle. Start early, because the last stretch of road is slow.

How Much Time Do You Need at Kodige Falls?

This is my suggestion, not a fixed rule. Plan about 1.5 to 2 hours: the walk, a swim or rest, and the walk back. If you also visit nearby places like Rani Jhari and Kelagur Tea Estate, plan a half day or full day.

Tips for Visiting Kodige Falls

  • The canteen may open only on weekends. Carry food and water on weekdays.
  • Keep cash for tickets and the canteen.
  • Ask locals or nearby shops about off-road vehicles. They may not always be available.
  • In the monsoon, enjoy the falls from a safe distance. Do not enter the water when it is strong.
  • Do not litter. Use dustbins or carry your waste back.
  • Carry a change of clothes and a towel if you plan to swim.
  • Wear shoes with good grip.

Nearby Places to Visit After Kodige Falls

Kodige Falls is a good starting point if you want to find hidden waterfalls near Mudigere and see more of the area.

Rani Jhari Edge Point

Rani Jhari Edge Point is about 5 km from Durgadahalli Falls. It is a viewpoint at the edge of a cliff. On a clear day, you can see green mountains and deep valleys. In the rainy season, mist and clouds often cover the valley. Trek guides also say that you can see the Kudremukh range from here.

The viewpoint is on the same trail that leads to Ballalarayana Durga Fort, so many people visit it as part of a longer trek. Go in the morning for the best view, because clouds can hide the valley later in the day. Wear good shoes, as the ground near the edge can be slippery after rain. Take care and stay behind the edge. Pack water and snacks, because shops are few.

Kalabhyraveshwara Temple, Durgadahalli

Kalabhyraveshwara Temple is a Hindu temple in Durgadahalli village. Trek guides say that the trek to Ballalarayana Durga starts from this temple. Tour operators also include it in their Durgadahalli itineraries. It is a quiet and simple stop, and a good place to start the morning before you move on to the falls or the trek. Because it is in the same village as the Durgadahalli waterfalls, you do not need to travel far. Please dress simply and keep the place clean. Timings are not confirmed, so ask locals before you go.

Ballalarayana Durga Fort and Bandaje Falls

The fort and the waterfall are popular trekking spots. The trek starts about 4 km from Durgadahalli, near Rani Jhari. Trek guides describe the fort as a Hoysala-era structure, although some sources give different dates.

The fort is about 3 km from the temple on the trail (about 1.5 hours). Bandaje Falls is further ahead on the same route. My original post says the fort is about 3–4 km away and the falls about 8 km along the same route. The trek is called easy to moderate by some trek groups. Book your trekking slot online through Karnataka Eco Tourism before you go. One trek guide lists the permit at ₹250 per person, but please check the official site for the current price. Start early, carry water, and wear trekking shoes. Do not go in heavy rain without local advice.

Kelagur Tea Estate

Kelagur Tea Estate is spread over about 1,200 acres and is about 5 km from Durgadahalli. It is known for its scenic views and tea production. It is a nice change after waterfalls and trekking, with tea plants growing in neat green rows. Consider adding it if you are visiting Rani Jhari, Kodige Falls, or Bandaje Falls on the same trip. Visiting rules and timings are not confirmed, so please ask locally before you go. Carry water and keep the place clean. If the weather is clear, it is a good place to take photos and relax.

Suggested One-Day Plan Near Durgadahalli

This is a planning idea for readers. It is not a trip I followed.

  1. Morning: Reach Durgadahalli early. Visit Kalabhyraveshwara Temple.
  2. Late morning: Walk to Kodige Falls and enjoy the water.
  3. Afternoon: Eat lunch (carry food on weekdays) and visit Rani Jhari Edge Point.
  4. Evening: See Kelagur Tea Estate if time allows, then drive back before dark.

Bandaje Falls is a full trek. Do it on a separate day with a booked slot.

Conclusion

Kodige Falls is easy to reach, cheap to visit, and calm. Come after the monsoon, carry cash, wear good shoes, and stay safe near the water. Before you travel, check local access and weather. Now you have the details of Kodige Falls, also known as Durgadahalli Falls, to plan your visit.
